How did the "Paul McCartney is secretly dead" rumour start and when did it begin?

I know they did alot back masking in their songs with messages like "Paul is dead, were all gonna miss him" But backmasking was invented until the 70s, so how did they eventually find out? Were their other reasons why people thought paul was replaced by a look alike and the real paul died?
